Signs Your Boiler Needs Servicing

Signs Your Boiler Needs Servicing

Your boiler works hard every day to keep your home warm and supply hot water. Like any machine, it gives off warning signs when something is not right. Recognising these signs early can save you from a full breakdown in the depths of winter. Here are the key signs that your boiler needs servicing or attention right now.

1. Strange or Unusual Noises

A healthy boiler runs with a low, steady hum. If you hear any of the following, book a service promptly:

  • Kettling: A rumbling, banging, or gurgling sound similar to a boiling kettle. Usually caused by limescale or sludge build-up on the heat exchanger restricting water flow. Common in hard water areas.
  • Banging on start-up: May indicate delayed ignition — a potentially dangerous fault where gas builds up before igniting.
  • Vibrating or rattling: Often loose components or a failing pump.
  • Whistling: Can indicate a faulty pump or air in the system.

2. Yellow or Orange Flame

The burner flame in your boiler should always be blue. If you can see a yellow or orange flame, stop using the boiler immediately and call a Gas Safe engineer. A yellow flame indicates incomplete combustion, which can produce carbon monoxide. This is a safety emergency.

3. Soot or Black Marks Around the Boiler

Sooting or dark staining around the boiler casing, flue terminal, or nearby surfaces is a serious warning sign of incomplete combustion or a flue problem. Carbon monoxide may be escaping. Turn off the boiler and call a Gas Safe engineer immediately.

4. Pilot Light Keeps Going Out

If the pilot light on your boiler keeps extinguishing itself, there are several possible causes: a faulty thermocouple, a draught problem, or deposits on the pilot assembly. Do not repeatedly attempt to relight it without investigation. Have an engineer check the cause.

5. Increasing Energy Bills

If your gas bills have increased significantly without a change in usage habits, your boiler may be losing efficiency. A boiler clogged with sludge, limescale, or debris burns more gas to produce the same amount of heat. An annual service cleans the system and restores efficiency.

6. Boiler Takes Longer to Heat Your Home

If you notice that radiators are taking much longer to reach temperature, or that some rooms are not reaching the thermostat setting, the boiler may be struggling. This could indicate sludge in the heating system, a failing pump, or worn internal components.

7. Radiators Have Cold Spots

Cold spots at the bottom of radiators indicate sludge and magnetite build-up. Cold spots at the top suggest trapped air that needs bleeding. Both are signs that the heating system needs attention and possibly a powerflush.

8. The Boiler Keeps Cutting Out

If your boiler repeatedly switches itself off (known as lockout), it is detecting a fault and shutting down for safety. Common causes include low water pressure, a faulty pump, thermostat issues, or blockages. Repeated lockout needs professional diagnosis.

9. Leaks or Drips Around the Boiler

Any water around the base of your boiler or dripping from connections is not normal. Leaks can indicate failed seals, corrosion, or a faulty pressure relief valve. Turn off the boiler and call an engineer. Water damage can compound the original fault.

10. Your Carbon Monoxide Alarm Goes Off

If your CO alarm sounds, evacuate the property immediately, leave doors open, and call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999. Do not use the boiler until it has been inspected and cleared by a Gas Safe engineer. Carbon monoxide is odourless and can be fatal.

11. Boiler Is Over 10 Years Old Without a Recent Service

If your boiler has not been serviced in the last 12 months, or is over 10 years old, it should be inspected as soon as possible. Older boilers without regular servicing can develop safety issues that are not obvious to the untrained eye.

Do Not Ignore the Warning Signs

Any of the above signs warrant at minimum a call to a Gas Safe engineer. Many issues are minor and inexpensive to fix if caught early. Left unattended, they can develop into full breakdowns, expensive repairs, or — in the worst case — dangerous situations.

Book a Boiler Service Today

If your boiler is showing any of these signs, do not wait for the annual service date. Find a Gas Safe registered engineer near you through Checkatrade or compare quotes via Leads2Trade.
